2019 Bentley Bentayga Speed
Description
Key Points: Bentley Akrapovic Exhaust System, Bentley Rear Entertainment, Bentley Signature Audio System.
Hand-built at Crewe, the Bentayga Speed builds on a long tradition of Speed models, which began with the Continental GT Speed in 2007. The most powerful Bentyga to date, it maintains the performance credentials proved by its predecessor, which claimed the production SUV record at the gruelling Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2018.
The Bentayga Speed is equipped with the desirable Mulliner Driving Specification as standard, and is powered by the 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12, delivering 626bhp and 664 lb ft of torque. Maximum speed is increased to 190 mph, while the 0-62 mph sprint is completed in 3.9 seconds.
To use this power appropriately, the Bentayga Speed is equipped with four on-road ‘Drive Dynamics’ modes: Comfort, Sport, Bentley and Custom. Uniquely in the Speed, the Sport mode has been recalibrated to enhance response from the W12 engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission, together with the air suspension system and Bentley Dynamic Ride.
To aid efficiency, the engine control unit can deactivate one complete bank of six cylinders as required. In 5th to 8th gears, when the driver releases the throttle (at motorway cruising speed, for example) the car will open the torque converter, dropping the engine to idle and allowing the car to roll or ‘sail’. When the throttle is reapplied, or the car starts going downhill and detects an increase in speed, the transmission is re-engaged.
On the exterior, it features dark-tinted headlights, body-coloured side skirts, unique front and rear bumpers and an elongated tailgate spoiler. A dark-tint radiator and bumper grilles, unique 22-inch wheels and ‘Speed’ signature badging add to the sporting design cues.
Inside, ‘Speed’ seat embroidery on the backrest of all seats is included as standard, as are contrast stitching and the Mulliner Driving Specification diamond quilting. Discreet metal ‘Speed’ badging to the front fascia and ‘Speed’ illuminated tread plates complete the signature look.
