2018 Porsche 911 (991.2) GT2 RS Weissach
Description
Key Points: Weissach Package, Clubsport Package, Magnesium Wheels
The 991-generation GT2 RS was initially unveiled at the Xbox 2017 E3 event as the cover car for Forza Motorsport 7, before being officially launched at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed alongside the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series.
It is powered by a 3.8 L twin-turbocharged flat-six producing 691 hp at 7,000 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful production 911 variant ever built, mated to a 7-speed PDK transmission. Porsche claims that the car will accelerate from 0–60 mph in 2.7 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 211 mph.
The car has a magnesium roof, while the front lid, wings and boot lid are made of carbon fibre, the front and rear apron are made of lightweight polyurethane, the rear and side windows are made of polycarbonate and the exhaust is titanium. The powerful Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) are included as standard equipment. Porsche claims the car has a wet weight of 1,470 kg (3,241 lb).
The optional Weissach package reduces weight by 30 kg (66 lb), courtesy of the additional use of carbon fibre and titanium parts. This includes the roof, the anti-roll bars, and the coupling rods on both axles being made out of carbon fibre, while the roll cage is made from titanium. The package also includes a set of magnesium wheels specially made by BBS.
In September 2017, the 911 GT2 RS driven by Porsche test driver Lars Kern set a 6:47.3 minute lap time around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, averaging a speed of 114.40 mph. At the time, it was the fastest Nordschleife lap ever recorded by a production car. In 2019 Porsche set further production lap records with the car at various North American circuits: 1:24.88 minutes at Road Atlanta, 2:15.17 minutes at Road America and 1:22.36 minutes at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
