2011 BMW 1 M Coupe
Description
Key Points: Sapphire Black 1 M Coupe, Convenience Package, Premium Package.
The BMW 1 Series M Coupé, often referred to as the 1M, is the high-performance model of the E82 coupé range, and is widely regarded as one of the best ‘M’ cars of all time.
At the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show, BMW unveiled the 1 Series tii Concept, which was thought to be a preview of the 1M. However, the eventual 1M model appeared four years later and with significant differences, such as a six-cylinder engine.
The 1M featured BMW M's second turbocharged engine, after the ‘S63’ V8 which debuted in the X6M. The 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged ‘N54’ unit fitted to the 1M produces 335 bhp at 5,900 rpm and 332 lb ft of torque from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm, with an additional 37 lb ft available during overboost. The sole transmission available was a six-speed manual. As a result, the 1M can complete the 0-62mph sprint in just 4.9 seconds, and has a limited top speed of 155mph.
The front and rear track widths were widened by 74 mm and 46 mm respectively, and a limited-slip differential was fitted. There is an M Dynamic Mode button, which partially or fully deactivates the stability and traction control systems, while an M button alters the throttle response.
Initial plans were to limit production of the 1M Coupe to 2,700 units, but the final production total was 6,309, with 450 examples delivered to the UK market. Only 132 UK-market cars were ordered in Sapphire Black Metallic, making it the rarest of the three colours (150 were ordered in Alpine White, and 168 in Valencia Orange).
The 1M Coupe placed third in the Evo Magazine 2011 Car of the Year awards. It also received Richard Hammond's 2011 Car of the Year award in Top Gear magazine.
