The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is a rare limited-production track-oriented sports car, and the first Mercedes designed and built from scratch entirely by AMG, with assistance from Formula One legend David Coulthard. The car is the successor to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and was described by Mercedes-Benz as a spiritual successor to the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing.
Upon its introduction at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the SLS AMG's 563hp 6.2-litre ‘M159’ V8 was the most powerful naturally aspirated production series engine ever produced. It is paired with a seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch automatic transmission, and selectable driving modes include ‘C’ (Controlled Efficiency), ‘S’ (Sport), ‘S+’ (Sport plus) or ‘M’ (Manual). The SLS AMG is capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 196 mph.
Optional on the SLS AMG are carbon-ceramic disc brakes, with six-piston aluminum front callipers and four-piston callipers at the rear. These brakes provide increased stopping power, with a 40% weight reduction compared to the standard braking system.
The SLS AMG has a retractable rear wing which extends at 75 mph for improved stability, and also acts as an airbrake. It rides on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear AMG light alloy wheels, with seven spokes as standard, and twin-five spoke and ten-spoke designs available as an option.
This example is finished in the rare and desirable shade of Alubeam Silver, which was an expensive cost option upon the car’s release. The paint is applied by hand in seven layers at a specialized location, and includes specially aligned flakes designed to mimic the appearance of molten silver.
