2024 Rolls-Royce Cullinan Series II Black Badge
Description
Key Points: Paint Protection Film (PPF) Applied To Whole Car, Carbon Fibre Spirit of Ecstasy, Shooting Star Headlining, Rear Theatre Configuration, Rolls-Royce Bespoke Audio.
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is a renowned luxury SUV, which marks the first vehicle from the British manufacturer to feature an all-wheel drive powertrain. It is named after the Cullinan Diamond, the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever discovered, and sits above the Ghost and below the Phantom in the Rolls-Royce line.
The Cullinan uses an aluminium space frame chassis, which is a version of the modular ‘Architecture of Luxury’ platform which made its debut in the Phantom VIII. Its exterior design has been adapted from the 8th-generation Rolls-Royce Phantom, such as the front grille and the headlights, while the interior features leather-trimmed seats and wooden appliances, as well as a luggage compartment-mounted cocktail table with leather camping seats, which is known as the ‘viewing suite’. The Cullinan is the only Rolls-Royce to have a glass partition between the luggage and passenger compartments.
It has a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle, as well as self-levelling air suspension, electronically controlled dampers front and rear, and electrically actuated active anti-roll bars. The Cullinan features various driving modes, including an off-road setting, which lowers the dynamic suspension by 40mm.
Like the Phantom VIII, the Cullinan employs a four-wheel steering system to improve both manoeuvrability at low speeds and stability at higher speeds. There is a stereo camera integrated into the front windscreen that scans the road ahead and adjusts the suspension proactively to improve ride quality. This system, dubbed "The Flagbearer" by Rolls-Royce, operates at speeds of up to 62 mph.
The Black Badge is a special performance-based edition of the Cullinan, with black-painted exterior trim, including the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy, and carbon fibre interior inlays. Its power comes from a twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V12, producing 591bhp and 664lb ft of torque, coupled to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.
Announced in May 2024, the Series II Cullinan Black Badge is described by Rolls-Royce as a more evolved and visceral expression of the marque. It features a new front end featuring a lower air intake with widened veins, as well as an illuminated black Pantheon grille and extended black trim elements, which now cover the window surrounds, door spears and door handles.
The Series II can be specified with its exterior colours on the lower body surfaces, as well as the subtly enhanced lower sill, valances, and lower front bumper. The exterior treatment is completed with 23-inch wheels featuring ten interwoven spokes – the first time wheels of this size have been offered by the marque on a Black Badge model.
Inside, Placed Perforation seating can also be incorporated, where up to 107,000 0.8- and 1.2-millimetre perforations are made onto the seat leather, creating an abstract pattern inspired by the shapes and shadows of the clouds over the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood in the twilight hours.
The Series II can also be specified with bespoke instrument dials, now available in five neo-futuristic colourways including Vivid Grellow, Neon Nights, Cyan Fire, the kaleidoscopic-style Synth Wave, and as seen on this particular car, Ultraviolet.
Other key features on the Series II include decreased brake pedal travel for a more immediate response, a new clock cabinet that incorporates a black Spirit of Ecstasy figurine, a slightly recalibrated throttle and ZF eight-speed gearbox, and air suspension with a slightly stiffer ride.
