2016 Porsche 911 R

Description

Key Points: Single-Mass Flywheel with Reinforced Clutch, Light Design Package, Sports Chrono Package

The original 1967 Porsche 911 R was a road-going homologation special that raced in the Tour de France and Targa Florio. It featured a 2.0-litre flat-six, fibreglass hang-on panels and lightweight seats.

At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, Porsche unveiled a second-edition 911 R, limited to 991 individually numbered examples. It has an overall weight of 1,370 kilograms, a high-revving 4.0 L six-cylinder engine from the 991 GT3 RS (producing 493bhp at 8,250rpm and 339lb ft of torque at 6,250rpm), and a six-speed manual transmission. The R has a top speed of 201mph, due to a lower drag coefficient compared to the GT3 RS.

The 911 R shares most of its underpinnings with the GT3 RS, but removes the rollcage, rear wing and associated bodywork, but adds the GT3 RS double-bubble magnesium roof, carbon fibre bonnet and a pair of bespoke carbon fibre front wings.

Inside, there are fixed-back, carbon-shelled bucket front seats, and no rear seats. Air conditioning and an audio system are removable options to save weight, while a lighter flywheel and polycarbonate windows can also be selected. The result is the lightest 991-era 911 at 1,370kg, which is 50kg lighter than GT3 RS, and 60kg lighter than GT3.

Suspension is as per the GT3, with two-stage adjustable dampers, dynamic engine mounts, rear-wheel steering, a locking rear differential and carbon-ceramic brakes.
