2015 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6
Description
Key Points: Right Hand Drive Example, Brabus Exhaust System, Sliding Panoramic Sunroof, Rear Entertainment.
The Mercedes-AMG G 63 6x6 is a high-performance variant of the six-wheel G 320 CDI developed for the Australian Army from 2007. It combines the engine from the G 63 with 6x6 Unimog-style portal axles, a pick-up version of the G-Class body, and the usual luxurious interior.
Under the bonnet is a 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8, delivering 536hp and 561lb-ft of torque to all six wheels in a nominal 30:40:30 split through the seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic transmission with high and low range gearing, five differential locks, and an extra driveshaft for the rearmost axle. Despite its considerable 3,775kg kerb weight, it can reach 60mph from a standstill in 7.8 seconds, before reaching a limited 100mph top speed.
With 18.1-inches of ground clearance and a wading depth of 39.4-inches, the G 63 6x6 is a true off-roader. It rides on 18-inch beadlock wheels with massive 37-inch tyres, and features an air compressor to reduce or increase tyre pressure in as little as 20 seconds, in order to adapt the traction to loose driving surfaces.
